The first thing I thought when I received our gift from Shellback Rum was that WOW, this looks like some really really nice rum! The second thought was, do I have to wait for my husband to come home before I can try some!?! HA! Of course not. Shellback’s Rum is made at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and presents a fun and unique presentation that’s got roots in history! See, Sailors in the Royal and U.S. Navies that have crossed the Equator are nicknamed "Shellbacks" or "Sons of Neptune" and Equator-crossing ceremonies have been a part of that tradition since the early 1800’s!! As I’m sure you can imagine, rum is a staple of these historical ceremonies and Shellback builds on that with this really unique and fun presentation of the rum. Other than just all of that, this rum is delicious!
Shellback’s Spiced Caribbean Rum boasts a combination of 12 different spices including cinnamon bark oil, ginger oil, vanilla, allspice, and nutmeg among others. It is medium-bodied and and smooth tasting and isn’t nearly as overpowering as some of those other rums you may have tasted before. Also, as my Husband and I do our best to eschew sugar – I’m excited to see that this Spiced Rum doesn’t contain any added sugar. My first glass of this rum was on the rocks and it went down really easy… I’m excited to give this a taste in a Mai Tai or Rum and Ginger as I think it will pair perfectly with those flavors.
The Shellback Silver Rum has been aged a year in used bourbon barrels and has a fantastic vanilla aroma which makes it perfect for adding to a refreshing Piña Colada or Rum and Coke. I was so excited to get this into a drink ASAP but didn’t want to wait until I could go to the grocery store to get the necessary ingredients for one of the awesome Shellback Rum Recipes. After staring at my options in our fridge I realized we had some Coconut Milk and Coconut Water w/Pineapple.. I decided to try my hand at a make-shift-colada ™!
Here’s my successful recipe:
- 8 oz of Shellback Silver Rum
- 8 oz of Coconut Milk
- 4 oz of Coconut Water with Pineapple
- 1 Tbsp Agave Syrup (Optional)
Fill blender with ice, add all ingredients and blend until smooth! Garnish with some grated cinnamon and enjoy!! Shellback Silver Rum made the drink delicious. I shared with the Husband when got home… his comments? "WOW! This is tasty! It’s not not crazy sweet either which is nice. Is that vanilla I smell? Can I have more??!" Let’s just say we put a pretty good dent in our new bottle of Shellback Silver Rum that evening. We’re definitely excited to make ourselves some Pirate’s Daiquiris next time!
Shellback is also a sponsor of the America’s Cup Oracle Team USA which is really neat! Our family is planning to go watch the America’s Cup this year and we’ll be sure to have some Shellback on hand for delicious boat drinks! My dear husband and I have always enjoyed sailing and we’ve crossed the equator a few times together by airplane but never on a boat… as soon as that time comes (I hope it will) we’ll definitely make sure to have some Shellback on hand to celebrate our own Equator-crossing!
You don’t have to wait though! Join Shellback on Facebook and go pick some up at your local Liquor store and start enjoying quality spiced or silver rum today!
