How many times have you been ready for that perfect pic and snapped away – only to find out later that shadows or details of a PRICELESS expression were completely blown out? How about a friend’s epic candid gaze was marred by a pair of crazy red eyes?! I know it’s happened to me! This has led me down two roads… either become a pro at Photoshop and spend tons of time editing or save up hundreds for a pro-level flash unit…
Until now! We recently got the opportunity to review Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop which allows you to bounce your SLR’s camera flash off of a wall or ceiling to cut out that harsh flash look and give you the beautiful bounced flash, immersive light, a look that the pro-level flashes bring to the table…
The problem before lightscoop – I used my camera’s pop-up flash to take photos and the light source comes from right over the top of the lens. This gave me VERY harsh light, the all-too-common red eye, blown out features, and a crazy shadow silhouette background. So what do we do?
Move the light source with the help of lightscoop! Lightscoop bounces off the ceiling or off a wall and all of the sudden you don’t see the shadows, you don’t see the red-eye, and you get SOFTER and WARMER light that makes your subjects look just as beautiful as they really are! For example – think about when you’re outside taking a pic… you’re always thinking about where the sun is, at what angle, and how it’s going to affect your photo… right? But as soon as we get inside it’s just like boom, straight on from the flash and the result? Nasty, harsh, red-eye pics of the baby, kiddo or family pet.
Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop is simple – slide it in your camera’s flash hot-shoe (if you have an SLR, you’ve got a place for an external flash, that’s where this goes!), pop up your on camera flash, change a couple of settings (Professor Kobre makes this part SO SIMPLE), and fire away. See the differences below…
I know I don’t need to tell you which was taken WITH lightscoop and which wasn’t – but I do want to point out a couple of things that I’ve been ranting about this entire post. Look at the pic on the left… look at what the flash did to this picture! It’s not the most interesting subject but it does prove the point I’m trying to make – this picture is terrible with just the on-camera flash. There’s no color, it’s FILLED with harsh shadows, glare, vignetting (shadows around the edges)… Now, let’s look at the picture on the right! Using Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop I bounced my Canon XSi’s on-camera flash off of the ceiling and it’s like magic! My sample pic is filled with definition, warm all-encompassing light, and no harsh shadows! It’s like there is a different light source in the room other than my camera’s flash… and the WHOLE picture is filled with light, not just the spot directly in front of the camera’s flash.
Well, you get the picture (sorry, bad pun) and, well, a picture IS worth a thousand words so if you have an SLR and something worth taking pictures of (c’mon, we all do), you can’t go wrong getting yourself a Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop!
