My hubby and I have had nearly a dozen conversations about how to teach children about money. It’s a tricky topic. I have always been very good at managing money, saving money and spending money wisely. On the other hand, my husband (sorry to throw you under the bus babe but it’s true) seems to not understand the concept, beyond a ‘make it quick and spend it faster’. I can give him some credit though, he’s improving.
Was it the way we were raised? So differently? Why do some children want to save every penny, while another wants to spend it? Why do some kids learn to be smart and thankful for it, while others practically act like money grows on trees?
It is an interesting concept for sure.
Teaching a child to be responsible with money isn’t easy. I do think it takes a great parental example and also some learning by doing. There are many ways to do this. With allowances. With starting a bank account at a young age. With children earning money in a varieties of ways, and then teaching them to give 10% to church or charities, save some and then spend the rest as a reward. What else?
Well, I was ecstatic to hear that Dave Ramsey has children-specific products to help children learn about money.
